Generální manažer Jim Rutherford už z osmi kandidátů vybral vítěze, ale potřebuje s ním ještě domluvit podmínky smlouvy. Matthew Sekeres: Sekeres was told that Willie Desjardins spurned the Penguins as they only offered two years and he would have no authority to hire his own assistants.
William DePaoli: Desjardins camp interpreted the Penguins offer to be for two years, with the Penguins officials calling it a three year deal. Doesn’t really matter now.
William DePaoli: Things could change, but Ulf Samuelsson has told associates that the Penguins job isn’t right for him at this point.

Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: It’s sounding like Penguins pending UFAs Matt Niskanen and Jussi Jokinen will be playing elsewhere next season.
“I’ve talked with them,” Rutherford said. “I think both players would like to return. But they’re also coming off good years.
“It’s time for them to hit free agency and get their big contracts. With that being said, we’ll see what happens leading up to free agency.”
Neil Sheehy, Niskanen’s agent “isn’t alarmed” as “this is exactly what Jim had told us privately.”

The Penguins hold the No. 22 pick at the draft and could look move it.

“We will trade that pick if it can help us get a player who can help us immediately,” Rutherford said.

Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Penguins GM Jim Rutherford said they have four primary UFA targets for Tuesday. They will go with their younger defensemen, and spend a little more money up front. The Pens have seven forwards under contract for next season with Brandon Sutter and Nick Spaling as RFAs. They are looking for a winger for Evgeni Malkin and improving their bottom-six. The Penguins are looking at Malkin’s friend, Nikolai Kulemin. The Penguins plan to be aggressive.
“You can always be aggressive,” Botterill said. “Are you going for top-end forwards and defensemen? No. But you can be aggressive going after specific needs. That’s what we’re going to do on July 1.”
Brooks Orpik and Matt Niskanen won’t be getting new deals from the Penguins.

Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Penguins GM Jim Rutherford said that 2014 1st round draft pick Kasperi Kapanen could make the team next year.
“We have to keep in mind that Kapanen could come in and make this team,” he said. “He’s played with men [in Finland] for two years. He’s a good player.”
Their roster is work-in-progress, and could be up until next years trade deadline.

Elizabeth Rancourt of TVA Sports: (s/t - L.A. Lariviere and Google translate) Kris Letang was asked by Penguins GM Jim Rutherford last month to submit a list of 15 teams that he’d accept a trade too. Letang said that the Canadiens were one team on his list.

Will DePaoli of Inside Pittsburgh Sports: Source saying it’s the Penguins intentions to keep Rob Scuderi. They haven’t been actively been shopping him. The Penguins haven’t approached Scuderi about waiving his modified no-trade clause. Scuderi can block trades to 15 teams.
The Penguins have made a two-year offer to RFA Nick Spaling, who has an arbitration hearing scheduled for July 31st. Spaling is looking for at least $2.5 million a season.

Brandon Sutter is a year away from unrestricted free agency. The Penguins have given Sutter three different offers (short and long-term) over the past 10 to 14 days.
